Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has raised concerns over allegations of police personnel collecting money from trucks along the National Highway at Mawkhanu and Thangshalai.
The KSU said it received complaints from several people and, on September 30, sent a team led by its CEC Education Secretary Alerick Kharjana to Diengpasoh and Thanglaskai to verify the allegations.
According to the KSU, its members recorded footage during the visit which they claimed showed police personnel collecting money from trucks. The organisation alleged that trucks carrying construction materials, earth and food items were being asked to pay between ₹200 and ₹500 per vehicle.
The KSU has sought clarification from the authorities on the alleged collections and questioned whether senior officials were aware of the practice.
The organisation has called for an independent inquiry to establish the facts and determine whether any police personnel were involved in unauthorised collection of money.
The KSU said it would submit a formal complaint to the concerned authorities and urged the government to take appropriate action based on the findings of the inquiry.
