Shillong: Opposition Member and Nongkrem Legislator, Ardent M Basaiamoit, raised concerns regarding the Karbi Student’s Association (KSA) and their recent statement, which threatened a situation similar to Manipur if they were to lose their lands in Khanduli to Meghalaya.
During the ‘Zero Hour’ session, Ardent M Basaiamoit expressed deep concern over the KSA’s statement, likening it to adding fuel to the existing fire. He questioned the government about the actions taken to address the KSA’s statement, emphasizing the potential for chaos and disruption of peace in the border area shared by Meghalaya and Assam.
In response to this query, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed his disapproval of the KSA’s statement, noting that it had not been accepted even by their counterparts in Assam. He also acknowledged the significance of maintaining peace in the border areas, ensuring the well-being of the people residing there.
CM Conrad reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining peace along the border and preventing any adverse impacts on the local population. He highlighted the recent visit of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member (CEM) to Shillong, which provided an opportunity to discuss the ongoing border dispute.
Chief Minister Conrad informed the House that plans for another round of border talks in October before making any decisive moves. He emphasized the importance of holding joint inspections in the affected areas at the Chief Minister’s level to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the border dispute.
