Mawkyrwat: The Village Defence Party (VDP) of Jashiar in South West Khasi Hills District has strengthened its efforts to curb the sale of illegal liquor and other intoxicating substances in the village, citing growing concerns over their impact on families, young people and the wider community.
The VDP said the easy availability and consumption of illegal liquor and other intoxicants have contributed to social problems and created insecurity within the community. Besides tackling illegal liquor, the VDP has also pledged to protect local water bodies and rivers from destructive and illegal activities and work towards maintaining peace, cleanliness and safety in the village.
As part of the initiative, a programme was held at the Jashiar Dorbar Hall, where members of the Jashiar VDP were formally inducted by J. Lakiang, Officer-in-Charge of Mawkyrwat Police Station.
Additional SP B. Kharjana addressed the gathering along with Jashiar Myntri Shnong Robert Lyngdoh. The programme was conducted by M. Thyrniang, while VDP president S. Mawlong delivered the vote of thanks. VDP members from Nongbah Marshilong and Mawthawiang Nongtraw also attended.
During the programme, a quantity of locally brewed liquor was also destroyed.
Kharjana encouraged VDP members to continue working against illegal activities and assured them that police would be ready to extend assistance whenever required. He also urged members to discharge their responsibilities honestly and responsibly.
He particularly appreciated the participation of women VDP members, commending them for coming forward and working towards maintaining peace and tackling activities that disturb harmony in the village.
