James Sangma’s nomination for Rajya Sabha seat cleared; Set for unopposed election

HEADLINES

National People’s Party (NPP) candidate and Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) nominee James P.K. Sangma moved a step closer to the Rajya Sabha after his nomination papers for the lone seat from Meghalaya were found valid during scrutiny on Tuesday.

The scrutiny was conducted at the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat by Returning Officer and Assembly Secretary Malthus S. Sangma, who accepted Sangma’s nomination after finding all documents to be in order.

James Sangma had filed his nomination papers on June 8 in the presence of senior NPP leaders and coalition partners.

With no other candidate entering the fray for the lone Rajya Sabha seat, Sangma is poised for an unopposed election. The process will be formally completed after the June 11 deadline for withdrawal of nominations, provided no withdrawals or unforeseen developments occur.

His candidature enjoys the backing of the ruling MDA coalition, making his election to the Upper House of Parliament virtually certain.
