After the MoU between Meghalaya and Assam was signed on the 29th of March in the presence of Union Home Minister, Amit Shah in New Delhi, today the residents of Maikhuli and other nearby villages who have been affected in this border resolution between the two states, in hundreds came out to demand that the Government revoke the MoU which was recently signed on the 29th of March in New Delhi because it is akin to crushing their rights of the residents and the public. The giving away of the fish pond of Maikhuli is already a forceful snatching away of the livelihood of the village as the income from this pond is used to repair the village roads and the requirements of the village runned school of Maikhuli.
On this day they were supported by the civil society organisations of Ri-Bhoi District including HANM, MPSO, All Ri-Bhoi Garo Mahila Association and people from the Naga, Khasi, Bodo communities as well as other residents in this area who all with one voice came forward to demand the Chief Minister to promptly revoke the MoU.
The leaders threatened to file a case against the State Government in the Supreme Court or High Court on this matter, and furthermore the leaders strongly criticised the silence and the lethargy of the MLA of Jirang, Sosthenos Sohtun, the MDC, Victor Ranee for even after so much cries from the public they have not come forward to show their faces.
