Two men from Uttar Pradesh accused of vandalising a homestay in Shillong will complete a six-day community service programme began on September 7 and are scheduled to complete it tomorrow, September 13.
The community service programme includes three days with the Gurudwara, two days with Jiva Cares and one day with Operation Clean Up.
On Saturday, the accused joined Operation Clean Up, a Shillong-based group of environmental volunteers led by Padma Shri awardee and senior journalist Patricia Mukhim, for a cleanliness drive at Urkaliar, Shillong.
The community service was ordered by the Meghalaya High Court, which quashed the FIR after the accused reached a settlement with the homestay manager and proprietor and paid ₹2.06 lakh in compensation. Two of the accused were also directed to pay ₹25,000 each.
The FIR was registered at Laitumkhrah Police Station on July 11 over allegations of damage to the homestay and threats to the complainant after the accused were refused permission to accommodate additional guests beyond the room’s permitted occupancy.
The accused later approached the High Court seeking quashing of the FIR. The homestay manager and proprietor gave their no-objection to the settlement.
Three of the accused are minors, including one aged 15 and two aged 17, while another had recently turned 18. The remaining two, both in their 20s, are preparing for competitive examinations, officials said.
The six-day programme, which began on September 7, will conclude on September 13 and includes cleaning and other community service activities as directed by the court.
