Shillong: An active cadre of the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), identified as Samuel Wahlang Pahsyntiew alias Samuel Wahlang, surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, at Mairang on February 25.
According to a press release issued by the Meghalaya Police, the surrendered cadre, a resident of Umpohwin under Mawlasnai Outpost in Ri-Bhoi district, surrendered in the presence of family members, village authorities and senior police officials.
Police said Wahlang is suspected to have been involved in the IED blast near the Syndicate Bus Stand close to Them Metor (Harijan Colony) in Iewmawlong, Shillong, on March 9, 2024, as well as in several similar activities in recent years.
During interrogation, he reportedly revealed that he and some Bangladesh-based HNLC cadres had been attempting to recruit youths into the unlawful organisation over the past two years.
Based on the information gathered, a case has been registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police also arrested two other cadres from Umsning who are suspected to have been involved in recruitment activities and in planting an IED at Umsning market on October 12, 2025. The device was later recovered and safely defused.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and further action will be taken in accordance with the law and the state government’s surrender policy.
