Shillong: Hima Sohra on Wednesday carried out the traditional cremation rites of its late Syiem, Paiem Freeman Sing Syiem, marking the first time in 99 years that such a ceremony has been performed.
The late Syiem was cremated at the royal cremation ground in Pomsohmen, following age-old customs of the Hima. Thousands of people gathered to witness the ceremony, reflecting the deep reverence held for the late traditional leader.
The ritual was conducted by Raid Mawshuit, which consists of 12 villages and holds the authority to perform the final rites of the Syiem.
Speaking during the ceremony, the newly appointed Syiem of Hima Sohra, Paiem Marremdor Syiem, said the event would be remembered as a significant chapter in the history of the Hima.
This is our ancestral custom and after 99 years, the people of Hima Sohra have once again witnessed the traditional cremation of their Syiem, he said.
Paiem Freeman Sing Syiem served as the Syiem of Hima Sohra for 44 years until his passing.
