Shillong, October 13: Expressing serious concern over persistent traffic congestion in Laitkor and surrounding areas, the Hynñiewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM), Nongkrem Circle, has demanded the construction of a four-lane road from Laitkor to its connection with National Highway 6 (NH-6).

Leaders of HANM Nongkrem Circle, accompanied by the organisation’s central president, Lamphrang Kharbani, and other members, met Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Public Works Department (PWD), Prestone Tynsong, on Monday and submitted a memorandum seeking immediate attention to the worsening traffic situation.

Speaking to reporters, Tynjuhbor Nonglait, President of HANM Nongkrem Circle, said the organisation decided to approach the Deputy Chief Minister following discussions among its leaders over the increasing traffic congestion along the Laitkor stretch.

Nonglait said commuters frequently experience traffic jams lasting several hours, causing serious inconvenience to residents and motorists travelling through the area.

He particularly highlighted the difficulties faced by patients and individuals requiring urgent medical attention, who are often delayed by prolonged traffic congestion.

The organisation maintained that upgrading the existing road to four lanes would help ease traffic movement and improve connectivity between Laitkor and NH-6.

Responding to the memorandum, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong reportedly informed the delegation that widening the road through the Madanryting area would be challenging due to existing conditions.

However, he indicated that a bypass road project connecting Sohryngkham, Mawshbuit and Mawlynrei was already being planned as an alternative route to address traffic congestion.

While acknowledging that the proposed bypass project could take time to materialise, HANM expressed hope that the government would take concrete steps to improve road connectivity and provide relief to commuters.

The organisation reiterated the need for long-term infrastructure solutions to address the growing traffic pressure in Laitkor and neighbouring areas.
