A police operation in Dhupdhara, Goalpara district, ended in a deadly gun battle early Sunday morning, leaving four notorious dacoits dead.
According to Goalpara Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nabaneet Mahanta, the incident took place around 5 a.m. at Ghiladubi, when a police team intercepted a Renault Triber (AS 02AE-2633) carrying the dacoits. The criminals allegedly opened fire, hitting even the vehicle of the Western Goalpara police chief. The police retaliated, killing all four on the spot.
The slain dacoits have been identified as Zahidul Islam of Mukalmua (Nalbari), Saburuddin Ali of Larujan (Boko), Chengbart Sangma of Puthimari (Krishnai), and Mukunda Rabha of Chitukona-Damra (Dudhnoi).
The operation was jointly carried out by teams from Dhupdhara and Agia police stations, under the leadership of Nupur Ranjan Neog, Co-DSP of Dudhnoi, and Abhilash Bora, CDSP of Western Goalpara.
From the site, police recovered four pistols, five mobile phones and the vehicle used by the gang.
Authorities said the group was involved in a recent robbery at Tiplai, Dhupdhara, and had planned another ambush near the Assam–Meghalaya border targeting businessmen. The men were wanted in multiple cases of extortion, kidnapping, robbery, and contract killing, and several had earlier arrests on record.
The bodies were first taken to Adarsha Hospital, Dhupdhara, before being shifted to Shaheed Nidhannuram Rajbanshi Civil Hospital, Goalpara, for post-mortem.
Police said the encounter was a significant blow to organised crime in the district, where dacoity and cross-border criminal activities have remained a persistent challenge.
