Shillong — In a development that could reshape the political landscape of Garo Hills, former South Tura MLA John Leslee K. Sangma has officially rejoined the Indian National Congress, the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) announced on Wednesday.
Sangma, a respected figure known for his vocal advocacy on tribal rights and public welfare, had briefly been associated with the United Democratic Party (UDP). After what party sources describe as deep reflection and consultations with community elders, supporters, and civil society members, Sangma returned to the Congress, calling it the only platform that continues to uphold democratic values and tribal identity.
Expressing serious concern over the growing crisis in Garo Hills, Sangma said unemployment, frustration among the youth, and a lack of direction under the BJP–NPP regime have pushed the region into uncertainty. “Our young people are suffering. Opportunities are shrinking, and the government has failed to inspire hope. The situation demands urgent groundwork,” he said.
He pledged to rebuild Congress’ organisational strength in South Tura and the wider Garo Hills region, saying the party remains the most credible and people-centric force capable of driving inclusive development.
Welcoming him back, MPCC president Vincent H. Pala said Sangma’s return sends a strong message to the current government. “His credibility and connection with the people will greatly strengthen our fight against the politics of neglect that has defined the BJP–NPP alliance. Support for Congress is clearly rising.”
The MPCC said Sangma’s rejoining will energise the organisation in Garo Hills and encourage others disillusioned with the present administration to reclaim their political voice under the Congress banner.
The Congress reaffirmed its commitment to defending constitutional rights, safeguarding tribal identity, promoting economic empowerment, and ensuring transparent governance across Meghalaya.
