The FKJGP East Jaintia Hills Unit, led by Deihok Sumer, met with the Member Secretary of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, demanding the cancellation of a public hearing scheduled for October 18. The hearing is intended to discuss the proposal for a new cement factory, Megha Top, in the Wahiajer Narpuh area.
Sumer expressed deep concern over the increasing number of cement factories in the region, which has led to significant air and water pollution. He emphasized the hardships faced by local residents due to environmental degradation and warned that the uncontrolled growth of such factories could worsen the situation.
The FKJGP also suspects political involvement in the continuous approval of these factories and strongly opposes the expansion. Sumer urged local leaders and the public to take action, highlighting that there are already eight cement plants in the area, and further industrialization could severely impact the environment.
