Farmers Awareness Programme on Muga Sericulture Boosts Employment and Economic Growth in North Garo Hills

A one day Farmers Awareness Programme on Muga Sericulture was organised by Central Silk Board, Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organization, P-3 Unit, Resubelpara, North Garo Hills District on 7th October, 2024 at Office Premises, Rompara. The programme was attended by a total number of 70 participants involving State Sericulture officials and progressive farmers from different block of the district. The programme began with the felicitation of the dignitaries. The programme was chaired by Dr. K. IndiraKumar, Scientist- C, P-4 Unit, Tura, West Garo Hills, Dr. Karshanal J, Scietist –B, P-3 Unit, Adokgre Dr. Saicharan D, Scietist-B, SSPC, Boko, Assam and Smt. N. Marak, Reeling Manager, State Sericulture Office, Resubelpara, as Guest of Honour. Programme Convener. Dr. Vikram Kumar, Scietist- C and OIC delivered the welcome address and emphasized that farmers as well as state officials to be attentive in the programme.

Dr. K. Indirakumar, Scientist-C, CSB, Govt. of India told how sericulture can generate employment and through muga culture and he also focused on how Muga culture activities have helped to curb the violence in Garo Hills. He was hopeful that traditionally practiced Muga culture will definitely improve economic status of Garo Hills and generate new employment opportunities.

Smt. N. Marak, Reeling Manager told that sound seed gives sound sericulture and she also discussed about the quality measure done in central and state farms. Dr. Karshnal J, Scientist-B explained about extension procedure in sericulture and how it is works for transfer the technology from lab to land and finally how to farmers of sericulture got benefited through this extension activity. Dr. Saicharan D, Scientist-B described about positive aspect of muga rearing and how it is important for social and cultural up-liftment.

There was an interaction of farmers with resources person. There were several questions raised by farmers and it was a very fruitful discussion with active participation of the farmers that led to a smooth flow of information and knowledge. After farmer’s interaction, lunch programme was arranged for farmers and staffs at the institute.
