Families Forced to Flee Homes Due to Mudslide in Nongspung Village

HEADLINES

Several families in Nongspung (B) village have been forced to leave their homes after mud and debris from a hill, dug up by a man named Donald Srinate (known as “Naga”), flooded their homes and farms. The mudslide has rendered their homes uninhabitable, with many of the residents living in temporary shelters for over a month. Crops like betel leaves and turmeric were destroyed, adding to the villagers’ distress.

The situation arose after Srinate dug into a nearby hill, causing the mud to flow into the village, blocking drainage systems and leading to flooding. The problem worsened during the rainy season, causing significant damage to homes, roads, and farmland.

Village leaders explained that a former headman gave Srinate permission to dig without informing other villagers. The new headman, Philemon Tongper, has tried to hold Srinate accountable, demanding compensation for the affected families. However, Srinate refused to pay, offering only to clean up the mud, which has further angered the villagers.

Despite their attempts to clean up the mess, the continuous flow of mud has made it impossible for the residents to return to their homes. They have now appealed to higher authorities and local organizations for assistance, seeking help to restore their homes and clean the village.
