EVEN AMIDST MANY PROTEST AGAINST THE CEM, GOVERNMENT REFUSES TO INTERVENE IN GHADC

SHILLONG, February 07: Following the election of Rakesh Sangma as Chief Executive Member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), several protests have been led by civil society organisations and the public in Garo Hills with the civil society organisations also announcing the intensification of the protest from the 8th of this month.

The Chief Minister Conrad Kongkal Sangma on being asked about the protests by the majority of the people in Garo Hills against the new CEM of the GHADC said that the election of Rakesh Sangma as the Chief Executive Member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) has been done as per the provisioned democratic process and all the MDCs have given their individual approval and therefore the Government does not want to intervene in any part of the matter.

Sangma said that the GHADC is presently in turmoil and it is necessary that the public, Council employees and civil society organisations allow the smooth functioning of the Council in order tor remove the problems ahead of it. He expressed hope that all the chaos in the GHADC can be resolved soon and added that the Government has given its support to the District Councils as best it can and will continue to support them and cooperate.
