Shillong: Cabinet Minister Sanbor Shullai has urged college teachers in Meghalaya to come forward and raise their grievances and concerns, saying that the Education Minister has recently joined the BJP and that their issues can now be taken up with both the state and Union governments.
Addressing the 36th Biennial General Conference 2026 of the Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association (MCTA) at the Auditorium of Synod College, Shillong, Shullai said teachers should bring their concerns to the party so that they can be raised with the state government as well as the Centre.
Referring to the concerns raised by MCTA president S.K. Pradhan, Shullai said his “door is open 24 hours” and urged the teachers to approach him with their issues.
He said he would take up their concerns with the state government and, if necessary, raise them with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Union Education Minister.
Shullai also referred to several developments faced by Meghalaya in recent months and recalled the challenges the state experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic four to five years ago.
MLA from Mawlai Brightstarwell Marbaniang, who attended the programme as the guest of honour, said that having been a teacher himself, he understood the difficulties faced by members of the teaching community. He urged teachers to remain united, particularly when raising issues concerning their rights and welfare.
As the MCTA was also scheduled to elect its new office-bearers during the conference, Marbaniang urged members to elect a president who would stand up for their issues and engage with the government, rather than one who remained close to those in power.
MCTA president S.K. Pradhan, Synod College Principal Dr G. Lyngdoh and MCTA members, including retired college teachers, were also present at the conference.
