Shillong: The MLA of Songsak and former Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma has strongly criticised the MDA-2 government and accused that all jobs opportunities especially in contract works have been taken away by those people in power.
Dr. Mukul and other MLAs has raised this issue during a discussion on unemployment among the state’s youth, initiated by Amlarem MLA Lahkmen Rymbui in the House today.
Dr. Mukul argued that since 2018, when the NPP-led MDA coalition came to power, young people aspiring to secure small contract jobs in the government departments have faced significant barriers. He claimed that the government has effectively blocked these opportunities, which traditionally provided employment to skilled youth.
Citing the Public Works Department (PWD) as an example, Dr. Mukul alleged that small contract jobs have been consolidated into a single list, favoring the big and sidelining smaller contractors and young job seekers. He contended that this approach excludes those who genuinely need these opportunities to gain employment.
Furthermore, Dr. Mukul criticized the state government for appointing out-of-state consultants in various departments while local youth continue to struggle for jobs. He expressed concern over the government’s handling of employment, suggesting it has caused serious doubts and frustrations among the youth.
