Shillong: The state government is caught in a dilemma over the proposed relocation of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp from Mawlai to New Shillong Township following opposition from local villages in the area. Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home, Prestone Tynsong, told the Assembly that in 2022 the government had allotted 10 acres in New Shillong for the CRPF camp, but resistance from residents stalled the signing of the MoU.
Replying to a question by Mawlai MLA Brightstarwell Marbaniang, Tynsong said he would engage with local leaders and dorbar shnong to address concerns. He urged Mawryngkneng MLA to help in making people understand the role of CRPF, clarifying that the force is deployed only during necessary situations and differs from other central security agencies.
Tynsong also informed that the strength of CRPF personnel in Shillong and Tura is less than 400 and is fully managed by the state government. Mawlai residents have long demanded the shifting of the camp since 2021, citing unrest and public resentment.
