Tura — Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma hoisted the newly installed high-mast national flag at the P.A. Sangma Sports Complex on Tuesday, marking a proud and symbolic moment for the people of Garo Hills. The ceremony was attended by West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal, SP Abraham T. Sangma, DIGs, officials, police personnel and local residents.
The Chief Minister said the tricolour represents unity, sovereignty and national identity, noting that Tura is now the second location in Meghalaya to host a high-mast flag. He announced that similar flags will soon be installed in Jowai and all district headquarters.
He outlined several major development plans, including the second phase of the Tura Beautification Project, which will receive ₹16 crore for upgrades to Tura Bazar, such as pavement renovation, new street lighting and an improved market façade. A third phase will beautify the stretch from Araimile Junction to the end of P.A. Sangma Road. The Paint My City campaign will continue, and he urged public cooperation to keep Tura clean.
Sangma highlighted key infrastructure projects in Dakopgre, including progress on the additional secretariat, a new Convention Centre near the MPSC office and the construction of Tura’s first 5-star hotel by the Hilton Group, expected to be ready within 24 months.
In preparation for the National Games 2027, he confirmed ongoing work on new galleries at Pa Togan Nengminja Stadium, the Multi-Disciplinary Indoor Stadium near P.A. Sangma Stadium and upgrades to the Sunny Hill Indoor Stadium.
The event began with a welcome address by Tura Municipal Board Chairman J.D. Sangma and featured cultural performances. The programme concluded with the Chief Minister flagging off a road-sweeping machine.
