The BJP 18-West Mandal, Shillong, has strongly condemned the alleged hurling of a petrol bomb at a fast-food outlet and the burning of a scooter in Mawbah during the ongoing Durga Puja festivities.
In a press release issued by Mike Pakynteiñ on behalf of the BJP 18-West Mandal, the incidents were described as disturbing acts of violence, intimidation and property destruction that threaten public safety and communal harmony.
The Mandal expressed concern over the safety of residents and business establishments in Mawbah and extended its solidarity to those affected by the incidents.
It noted that the incidents were particularly unfortunate given that Durga Puja symbolises the triumph of good over evil and promotes faith, unity and communal harmony.
The BJP 18-West Mandal urged the Meghalaya Police to conduct a thorough, impartial and time-bound investigation, identify those responsible and take stringent legal action against the perpetrators.
It also appealed to the authorities to strengthen security measures in the area to prevent further untoward incidents during the festive season.
Meanwhile, the Mandal urged the public to remain calm, refrain from spreading rumours and cooperate with the police in maintaining peace and order.
The statement stressed that such incidents should not be allowed to create fear, provoke tensions or disrupt the communal harmony of Shillong and Meghalaya.
It called for peace, security and mutual respect, particularly during the festive period.
