Police in Shillong have busted a bike theft racket originating from Golflinks, leading to the arrest of five individuals involved in multiple theft cases.
The accused have been identified as Vencentstar Tongwah (23) of Nongmensong, Lumshyiap; Kitborlang Mawlong (21); Royalroy Lyngdoh (23), both from Mawsiatkhnam; and Ayan Kharthangmaw (21) of Mawhati village. Earlier, Shabamutlang Syiemlieh (23) was arrested on March 2, which led to the unearthing of a wider criminal network.
According to East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem, a team from Pasteur Beat House proceeded to Jowai to interrogate the accused. During questioning, they confessed to stealing a Yamaha R15 from Umroi, another from Goraline in Laitumkhrah, and a scooty from Golflinks.
Based on their disclosure, police conducted a raid at an under-construction building in Ladrymbai, Dongwah and recovered stolen vehicles, including a Yamaha R15 (ML05 AB 2991) and a Yamaha Ray Z (ML05 AE 1478), along with dismantled parts of other stolen bikes and scooters.
Officials said the parts were packed in sacks, indicating plans to sell or distribute the stolen goods. The investigation is ongoing as police continue efforts to dismantle the entire theft network.
