Bank employees across Meghalaya, under the banner of the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), on Friday observed a nationwide strike by suspending banking operations and closing bank offices. As part of the protest, employees also held a peaceful demonstration outside the SBI Main Branch at Khyndailad.
The agitation was carried out in solidarity with bank employees across India, who are demanding that the government declare all Saturdays as holidays for bank employees, along with several other pending demands.
Speaking to the media, Edward Lynshing, Working President of the Meghalaya Bank Employees Association, said bank employees have been pressing the Government of India to implement a five-day banking week by granting weekly holidays on all Saturdays.
He warned that if the government fails to fulfil the demand, bank employees would be compelled to intensify their agitation in the coming weeks.
Lynshing further announced that bank employees will again observe a strike by shutting down banking services on September 28, 29 and 30, 2026. He also informed that an indefinite strike has been proposed from October 26, 2026, if their demands remain unresolved.
