Bangkok Road Collapses Into Railway Station Area

HEADLINES

A section of a major road in Bangkok caved in on Wednesday, creating a huge sinkhole that disrupted traffic flow. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, though three vehicles were damaged in the incident. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said initial assessments suggest the collapse was caused by ongoing underground construction work for a railway station.

Videos circulating online captured the dramatic moment as the road slowly sank, dragging down electric poles and damaging water pipelines, while vehicles scrambled to reverse before the ground gave way.

Authorities temporarily shut nearby hospital outdoor services for two days as a precaution, though officials clarified that the hospital building itself was unaffected. Residents of adjacent houses were asked to relocate, and power and water supplies in the area have been cut off.

Repair work is underway, though officials remain concerned that heavy rainfall during Bangkok’s monsoon season could worsen the damage.
