The Nongpoh Region Auto Owners and Drivers Association has issued a stern warning to auto-rickshaw drivers involved in the illegal sale and transportation of liquor, stating that anyone found engaging in such activities will be handed over to the police.
Addressing the media on Monday, Association President Banaser Lyngdoh and other office bearers said they had received several complaints from members of the public regarding certain auto drivers allegedly misusing the name of the association to carry out illegal activities.
According to the association, some drivers have reportedly been using their vehicles to transport and distribute liquor, particularly during the evening hours after completing their regular passenger services.
The association leaders alleged that liquor is often brought into Nongpoh from different locations and later distributed for sale, a practice they described as illegal and damaging to the image of the auto-rickshaw community.
Banaser Lyngdoh said the association would not tolerate any activity that brings disrepute to its name and warned that strict action would be taken against those found violating the law.
He further stated that if any driver continues to engage in such activities, the association would not accept responsibility for their actions and would instead assist law enforcement agencies by identifying and reporting the offenders.
While acknowledging the economic challenges faced by many drivers due to rising fuel prices and declining earnings, Lyngdoh stressed that financial hardship cannot justify involvement in illegal trade.
He urged all members to uphold the dignity of the profession and refrain from any activity that could tarnish the reputation of the association.
