Meghalaya Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has strongly defended the appointment of former MP Agatha K. Sangma as the Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Child Rights, calling her the most deserving candidate for the position.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, Ampareen dismissed the criticism surrounding Agatha’s appointment, which some have linked to favoritism due to her being the sister of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. Ampareen emphasized that Agatha, a three-time Member of Parliament, brings significant experience and qualifications to the role, making her well-suited for the job.
“Why should we reject someone as capable as Agatha, just because she belongs to a political family? Her credentials are impeccable,” Ampareen said. She further questioned if people would similarly criticize others appointed to public roles with political connections, highlighting that family ties should not overshadow a candidate’s qualifications.
The appointment has sparked some public backlash, with allegations that the government is favoring members of prominent families. However, Ampareen urged the public to stop doubting Agatha’s ability and to acknowledge her suitability for the role.
