The All Meghalaya Truck Owners & Drivers Welfare Association (AMTO&DWA) has warned of agitation if the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) fail to respond to its demands concerning the welfare and safety of truck drivers.
General Secretary Wellanstar Warlarpih and Vice President Dapkupar Nongrum said the association met officials of the NHAI and NHIDCL on August 3, when the authorities sought 10 days to respond to the demand for the construction of truck lay-bys along the National Highways.
However, the association said no response has been received despite the deadline having passed.
The association pointed out that truck drivers are facing considerable difficulties after government authorities prohibited trucks from being parked along the sides of National Highways.
It has therefore demanded the construction of adequate lay-bys where truck drivers can safely stop and rest, while also ensuring smoother and safer movement for other vehicles using the highways.
AMTO&DWA said it would be compelled to launch agitation if the authorities fail to address the demands.
