Traffic movement was disrupted after hundreds of residents from the Hima Langrin staged a protest in front of the office of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Wednesday.
The protesters gathered and stood on the road after they were denied entry into the KHADC premises as the main gate had been closed.
The residents had reportedly been invited for discussions. However, they sought permission from KHADC Executive Member Powel Sohkhlet to allow the protesters to enter the premises. Sohkhlet reportedly declined, stating that allowing a large crowd inside could disrupt ongoing examinations as well as court proceedings.
He then invited 10 representatives to come inside for the discussion. However, the residents refused to accept the arrangement, insisting that the entire group be allowed into the premises.
Following this, the protesters decided to remain outside the KHADC gate, resulting in disruption to traffic movement along the road.
