NEHU approves NOCs for NPP and VPP candidates ahead of Shillong Lok Sabha Bypoll

HEADLINES

North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has granted No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to two of its professors to contest the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election.

The approvals were issued to National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Dr DRL Nonglait of the Department of Khasi and Voice of the People Party (VPP) nominee Prof Batskhem Myrboh of the Department of Political Science.

The decision was taken during the 88th emergent meeting of the NEHU Executive Council held on July 30. A letter issued by the Joint Registrar subsequently confirmed that both professors had been granted permission to contest the election.

The development comes after Prof Myrboh approached the Meghalaya High Court over the alleged delay in the issuance of his NOC.

The by-election was necessitated following the death of sitting Shillong MP Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon on February 19.

With the NOCs now in place, both Nonglait and Myrboh have stepped up their election campaigns across the 36 Assembly segments that make up the Shillong parliamentary constituency.
