Shillong: A disturbing incident has surfaced from Ri-Bhoi district after a viral video showed schoolchildren rescuing a newborn baby buried near a school. Upon verification, authorities confirmed that the infant is a girl who had allegedly been buried alive by her mother shortly after birth.
The incident took place on Monday, April 27, in a village under Mawhati C&RD Block. According to sources, the baby was discovered the same day, prompting immediate action by village authorities, who launched a preliminary inquiry and soon identified the mother.
Preliminary findings indicate that the woman, believed to be in her early 20s, delivered the baby at home. Soon after childbirth, she allegedly buried the newborn at a site close to a school.
The village authorities promptly alerted the police, following which the infant was rushed to a nearby health facility and later referred to Civil Hospital Nongpoh for advanced care.
Sources said the condition of the baby is being closely monitored. The mother, who is reported to be in critical condition, is also undergoing treatment at the same hospital.
