MDC Shemborlang Rynjah Urges Nitin Gadkari for Urgent Action on Unsafe Shillong–Pynursla–Dawki Road

HEADLINES

Shillong: Concerned over rising accidents and unsafe conditions, KHADC MDC Shemborlang Rynjah has written to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari seeking urgent intervention on the Shillong–Pynursla–Dawki road.

In his letter, Rynjah highlighted the increasing number of fatal accidents, particularly during ongoing road widening works, attributing them to landslides, falling boulders, and poor safety measures. He cited recent incidents, including the death of two persons near Mawlieh, and noted that at least 10 lives have been lost since 2023 along the stretch.

Describing the road as a critical lifeline and key tourism corridor, connecting destinations like Dawki, Shnongpdeng and Mawlynnong, he said the deteriorating condition is impacting not only commuters but also tourism and local livelihoods.

Rynjah also raised concerns over delays in project completion, which have disrupted transportation and posed risks during emergencies. He pointed out several safety lapses, including the absence of crash barriers, warning signage, and proper traffic management in construction zones.

Calling the situation a serious lapse in road safety norms, he urged the Centre to conduct a comprehensive safety audit, install protective infrastructure, ensure accountability of executing agencies such as National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, and expedite the project.

He further stressed that infrastructure development must not come at the cost of human lives and sought immediate corrective measures to ensure public safety.
