Shillong: The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), East Khasi Hills, has issued a public advisory warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds, across the district from April 27 to May 1.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the district is likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning and very heavy rainfall over the next four days. Wind speeds are expected to range between 40 kmph and 60 kmph during this period.
On April 27, gusty winds of 50-60 kmph are forecast, while from April 28 to April 30, wind speeds are likely to remain between 40 kmph and 50 kmph. Similar weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, are also expected on May 1.
In view of the forecast, the DDMA has advised residents to take necessary precautions. People have been asked to secure loose objects such as tin sheets, signboards and other materials that could be blown away by strong winds.
The advisory also urges the public to switch off electrical appliances during thunderstorms and avoid venturing near rivers, streams, drains, culverts and waterfalls, as flash floods and strong water currents may pose serious risks.
Motorists have been cautioned against driving through flooded areas and are advised to stay away from electric poles and power lines to avoid electrocution.
The DDMA has further appealed to the public to remain vigilant and avoid entering rivers, streams and waterfalls during the period. In case of any emergency, citizens may contact the disaster helpline at 112.
Authorities have urged everyone to remain alert and take all necessary safety measures until weather conditions improve.
