HEADLINES

Shillong, April 11: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday inaugurated the Nabon Memorial Home at Mawiong Rim, Shillong, an initiative of the Jingiaseng Kynthei Shillong Ri Lum Presbytery aimed at supporting elderly and vulnerable women.

In his address, the Chief Minister said the home, named after the first Christian woman among the Khasis, reflects the core values of service, compassion, and care for the needy, which are central to Christian teachings.

He informed that the government is working towards establishing elderly care homes across the state, promoting the concept of active and happy ageing. He also highlighted the role of anganwadi centres in creating inter-generational spaces, where children and the elderly can interact, fostering mutual learning and emotional bonding.

Sangma noted that while tribal societies traditionally cared for elders, modernisation and urbanisation have weakened these practices, and called for collective responsibility from society, church, and government to address the issue.

The Nabon Memorial Home aims to provide a safe, secure, and dignified environment for widowed, abandoned, and destitute women.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister announced ₹25 lakh financial assistance from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund to support the initiative.
