Fresh Violence in Manipur: 3 Civilians Killed in CRPF Firing, Internet Shut and Curfew Imposed

HEADLINES

The situation in Manipur has once again turned volatile following fresh incidents of violence, leaving three civilians dead and several others injured in alleged firing by the Central Reserve Police Force in Bishnupur district.

According to reports, the firing took place in Tronglaobi during a protest where locals had gathered outside a CRPF camp, expressing anger over recent killings in the region. The protest reportedly escalated after demonstrators attempted to storm the camp, leading to clashes and subsequent firing by security forces.

The unrest was triggered by an earlier incident in which suspected Kuki militants allegedly launched a rocket attack on a residential house, killing two children and critically injuring their mother. The incident sparked widespread outrage, leading to protests across the district.

Eyewitnesses claimed that protesters accused security forces of failing to protect civilians, while reports also indicated damage to CRPF property during the clashes.

Following the firing, violence spread to other areas, including Imphal East, with roads blocked, vehicles set ablaze, and daily life severely disrupted.

Amid the escalating tension, the state government has suspended mobile internet services in five districts—Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur—for three days starting April 7. Authorities have also imposed curfew measures and intensified security deployment in sensitive areas.

Officials stated that efforts are underway to restore normalcy as the law-and-order situation continues to remain tense.
