Hold GHADC Polls early as situation improves: BJP

HEADLINES

Shillong: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Meghalaya has urged the state government not to wait for six months to conduct elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), stating that polls should be held sooner now that the situation has stabilised.

BJP Meghalaya spokesperson Mariahom Kharkhrang said that the law and order situation in Garo Hills has returned to normal, and there is no need to delay the elections. He emphasised that it is the democratic right of the people to elect their representatives without unnecessary postponement.

The state government had recently extended the tenure of the GHADC by six months after deferring the elections due to unrest arising from ethnic tensions.

Meanwhile, Kharkhrang also expressed appreciation to the Governor of Meghalaya, C. H. Vijayashankar, for approving amendments to the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils) Rules as applicable to the GHADC.
