Shillong: Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Tuesday appealed against politicising the recent tragedy at Thangsko, describing the incident as a deeply unfortunate event that led to the loss of many lives.
Expressing condolences to the bereaved families, Dhar said that in such difficult times the focus should remain on supporting the victims and ensuring justice, rather than engaging in political arguments. He informed that the government responded immediately after the incident by deploying the concerned authorities to carry out rescue operations and provide necessary assistance to those affected. He also assured that strict action will be taken against all those found involved in the illegal activities connected to the case.
The Deputy Chief Minister acknowledged that instances of illegal coal mining may still exist in some areas but reiterated that the government will take firm steps to ensure that the law acts strongly against those responsible.
He further stated that the state government is currently in discussion with the Centre to relax certain provisions related to scientific coal mining, particularly the 100-hectare requirement, which he said is too large and difficult for small operators to comply with. Efforts are being made to ease this condition so that smaller miners can operate within the legal framework.
At least 30 people were killed after an explosion occurred inside an illegal coal mine at Mynsngat-Thangsko in East Jaintia Hills on February 5, 2026.
