Shillong: Tension erupted in Maikhuli on Wednesday after residents discovered that the MGNREGS project stone in the village had been defaced with black paint, allegedly by individuals escorted by Assam Police. Village headman Welston R. Marak said that the presence of Assam Police during the act angered residents, prompting village groups FKJGP North Khasi Hills and ARMPF to rush to the spot and support the community.
As the organisations inspected the site, more Assam personnel reportedly arrived, leading to a heated exchange, with Assam officials insisting the location falls within their jurisdiction. FKJGP leaders then contacted the Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police, urging deployment of additional Meghalaya Police, citing that Assam forces arrived in large numbers while Meghalaya’s presence remained limited.
Locals say the incident has reignited long-standing border tensions, even as both states continue dialogue on disputed areas.
