Shillong: The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills on Tuesday imposed a night curfew along vulnerable stretches of the Indo-Bangladesh border in view of the escalating situation in neighbouring Bangladesh and the heightened risk of illegal cross-border activities.
Invoking Section 163 of the BNSS, the District Magistrate ordered that the curfew will remain in force from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM within a one-kilometre radius from the International Border’s Zero Line.
The directive comes amid fears of infiltration by illegal migrants, movement of unwanted elements, and activities involving proscribed militant groups, smugglers, and organised crime networks.
The order cited concerns that large groups may attempt to gather near the border under the cover of darkness to aid infiltration or carry out unlawful activities. Authorities cautioned that unchecked cross-border movement could disrupt peace and tranquillity in the district.
The restrictions prohibit movement of individuals attempting to cross into Indian territory, unlawful assembly of five or more persons carrying weapons or objects that could be used as weapons, and any form of illegal or undesirable activities including smuggling of cattle, contraband goods, betel nut, and other items.
The curfew order, issued ex-parte due to the urgency of the situation, came into effect immediately and will remain valid for two months from the date of issue unless withdrawn earlier.
