Shillong, September 27th, 2025: The 4th Sohra International Half Marathon 2025, culminated with national and international runners from across the country and the globe converged at Sohra to be part of the annual event. Besides the athletes, the marathon witnessed the active participation of fitness enthusiasts, first-time runners, senior citizens, youths and children.
The 4th Sohra International Marathon saw the record participation with 10,576 runners registered across categories. Participation has risen sharply from about 7,000 last year, with 13 international athletes and 337 runners from other states confirming.

Organized by the Meghalaya State Olympics Association (MSOA) in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, and recognised by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), the event was flagged off by the Olympic medallist and six-time world champion, Smt. MC Mary Kom in the presence of Shri Wailladmiki Shylla, Hon’ble Minister, Sports & Youth Affairs department, Shri Gavin Miguel Mylliemngap, Hon’ble MLA Sohra.
Shri DD Shira, MCS, Director, Sports & Youth Affairs department, said, “It was an honour to witness the 4th Sohra International Half Marathon 2025 bring together runners from around the country”. With a record-breaking participation of over 10,000 runners, this event showcases the growing enthusiasm for sports in Meghalaya. He commended the Meghalaya State Olympics Association and all involved for their tireless efforts in making this event a success.

Smt. Mary Kom said, “I had thoroughly enjoyed the exceptionally well-organized marathon, mesmerized by the breathtaking views and perfect weather”.
She expressed her heartening feeling to see participants having a great time while delivering outstanding performances. She congratulated all the participants and thanked the volunteers for their invaluable support. “I also thank the Government of Meghalaya for taking this initiative to promote sports and athletics in Meghalaya”.
She added that with the National Games on the horizon, the event marked a significant milestone in their journey to bring recognition to their state. She stated that she was proud to support the cause and hoped that the athletes would strive for excellence, bringing medals to their state and country.
The categories for the event were 21K Elite Open (above 18years),21 K Open (above 18years), 10K Open (18yrs to 39yrs), 10K Open (40yrs to 54yrs), 10K Veteran (Above 55yrs) and 5K Run for Fun.
The event aims to position Meghalaya as sports hub and to promote a healthy lifestyle among the citizens, and it was successful, as a sizable number of local community participants, participated in all events – the 21K, the 10K, and the Run for Fun (5K). In addition, over 2000 runners from Sohra itself participated in the event.

Senior citizens too chose to defy their age and ran alongside the youngsters and athletes. A senior citizen running in her jainkyrshah (traditional clothing worn by woman folk belonging to the Khasi Tribe), and folded pants was all smiles as she ran keeping up with other runners in the 5k “run for fun” while there were many running behind her. Little children were accompanied by their mothers or fathers, hand in hand. It was the cheers from the crowd and the volunteers that motivated the tired runners even as the sun beat down on them.
Notably, the event was ably managed by a team of volunteers from Laitryngew, Sohra, Shella-Bholahanj, police department and many other line departments. A medical team comprising of doctors and paramedics were also in place, water stations were also installed in designated areas.

The event concluded with a prize distribution to the winners and runners up of the marathon. Dignitaries included Shri Gavin Miguel Mylliemngap, Hon’ble MLA Sohra; Shri Balajied Synrem, Hon’ble MLA, Shella; Shri D. P. Wahlang, IAS, Chief Secretary; Smt Matsiewdor War Nongbri, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, Government of Meghalaya; Smt. R. M. Kurbah, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills; technical officials from AFI; other officials from department of sports & youth affairs, also came to support the runners and be a part of the activity in the region.

The total amount distributed was approximately ₹15.50 lakh among different categories.
The picturesque location of Sohra, known for its rustic charm and cascading waterfalls, was an added attraction as the event also seeks to promote tourism.
