CM Conrad K. Sangma Mourns Passing of Former Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr. DD Lapang

Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has expressed deep grief over the passing of former Chief Minister Dr. Donwa Dethwelson Lapang, who died on Friday evening at Bethany Hospital, Shillong, at the age of 96. Conrad recalled meeting Dr. Lapang just ten days earlier at his residence, saying he was saddened to hear of his demise during a hospital visit yesterday.

The Chief Minister shared personal memories, noting he first met Dr. Lapang in 1988 when his father, late Purno A. Sangma, was Chief Minister. He described Dr. Lapang’s death as not only a huge loss to Meghalaya but also to him personally, calling him both a mentor and guide.

The government has declared a three-day mourning period and announced a state funeral to be held on September 15 at Student Field, Jaiaw, Shillong, to honour the veteran leader’s legacy of service to the people.
