Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma told the Assembly that the state government has no intention of forcibly absorbing deficit teachers or taking over private schools. Responding to a query on education, he said the government believes in dialogue and consultation and will never impose decisions by force. He clarified that there is no plan to abolish the deficit system or provincialise teachers against their will.
Conrad stated that while some deficit teachers want to be provincialised, others oppose the move, and the government is still examining the issue. He revealed that the government spends around ₹1,100 crore annually to support salaries of teachers in deficit and private institutions, compared to ₹600 crore for government school teachers. Any expansion of assistance to private schools would require an additional ₹200–300 crore, raising the total to about ₹1,400 crore per year.
Earlier, Education Minister Rakkam Sangma informed that Meghalaya currently has 3,361 deficit lower primary schools, 881 upper primary schools, 2,363 secondary schools, and 186 higher secondary schools, where teachers are appointed by managing committees and only salaries are provided by the state.
