Khliehriat MLA Kyrmen Shylla has stated that while some people support the introduction of railway connectivity in Meghalaya, others strongly oppose it but he added that the government are carefully assess the situation before making any decision.
“As of now, no decision has been made because we need to thoroughly examine both the benefits and the drawbacks of bringing railway connectivity to the state,” Shylla said.
He noted that many people have shared their views on how railway connectivity could boost trade and commerce. He pointed out that the people of Jaintia Hills are known for their entrepreneurial skills and are well aware of the opportunities that could arise from improved transport infrastructure.
However, he also stressed that a public consultation is necessary before any final decision is taken.
He said that the bringing of Railway should not be imposed by force. The people who will be directly affected by the railway project should be the ones to decide whether they accept it or not, he stated.
