The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), through its three units – KSU Balat Border Area Circle, KSU Lawbah Border Area Circle, and KSU Sawsymper Circle – along with the KSU South West Khasi Hills District, has concluded a five-month-long signature campaign demanding the upgradation of Mawsynram C&RD Block to a Civil Sub-Division.
In their public statement, the KSU announced plans to escalate their agitation after highlighting that Mawsynram C&RD Block, established in 1962 during the Assam administration, is the oldest block in Meghalaya, predating the state’s formation by 10 years.
KSU Balat Border Area Circle President Bonsen Snaitang stated that the union has been holding peaceful protests over the past months, but the state government has remained unresponsive. He warned that stronger forms of agitation might follow, potentially disrupting law and order, and held the government accountable for any consequences.
Other speakers at the event included Puljohn Wanniang, Organising Secretary of KSU South West Khasi Hills District, and Samborlang Shabong, President of KSU Lawbah Border Area Circle.
The KSU reiterated that the residents of Mawsynram have a legitimate right to a Civil Sub-Division, and their demand will persist until action is taken by the government.
