The Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the central government should consider appointing a local as the Vice Chancellor (VC) of North Eastern Hills University (NEHU).
According to the Minister who is also the spokesperson of the State Government said that a local will understand the situation of the University better.
Speaking in support of the ongoing strike by students and teachers, Ampareen expressed her solidarity, although she mentioned she had not reviewed the specifics of their demands.
She also expressed hope that the Inquiry Committee appointed by the Government of India to investigate and address the issues at NEHU would submit a strong and effective report aimed at resolving the university’s challenges.
While acknowledging that the state government cannot interfere in matters concerning the university, which is under central government jurisdiction, she reiterated that the central government established institutions in the state not for its own interests but for the benefit of the people of Meghalaya.
