Science & Commerce College in Mawphlang Faces Prolonged Delays

HEADLINES

The construction of the Science & Commerce College in Mawphlang has been delayed for over seven years and remains incomplete. The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Mawphlang unit recently inspected the site and expressed concern over the slow progress. General Secretary Baniengskhem Kharbani criticized the government, noting that despite previous promises from Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma to complete the college within five months, the construction remains far from finished.

The college’s foundation stone was laid by former Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma in 2017, with construction beginning in 2019. Last year, MLA Mathew Beyond Kurbah raised concerns in the legislative assembly, comparing the stalled project to the long-delayed Crowborough Hotel.

Kharbani pointed out that the slow construction pace, with only a few workers on site, contributes to Meghalaya’s high school dropout rate, which stands at around 21%. He questioned when the college, which has a budget of ₹36 crores, would be completed, speculating that it might take another five years at the current pace.
