Jowai: The Rotary Club, Jowai in its goal to join hands with the world in commemorating the World Environment Day on the 5th of June, on the 3rd of June organised a special programme at Khliehtyrshi Secondary School, Thadlaskein Block in which Dr. Vincent Darling, Ex-Vice Chancellor of Martin Luther Christian College, Shillong was the Chief Guest with Sri. Vivek Kumar,Professor, North-Eastern Hill University,Shillong, the Waheh Chnong of Khliehtyrshi and members of the Rotary Club, Jowai also being present.
The inaugural gathering was conducted by Rtn. Montri Passah, MPHF, President of the Rotary Club which began with the singing of the National Anthem followed by an address on World Environment Day by Rtn. J.M Pohsngap, Ex- Conservator of Forest, Govt of Meghalaya followed by another speech from Sri.Vivek Kumar, Professor, North-Eastern Hill University,Shillong.
Rtn.J.M Pohsngap while speaking on World Environment Day informed that the theme of this year,” Only One Earth” had also been the main theme used in the commemoration of World Environment Day in the year 1972 and the reusing of this theme is probably the foresight of experts with regards to the environment.
Sri.Vivek Kumar in his speech triggered the minds of the students by holding a Slogan writing competition in part to inculcate in the children a sense of responsibility and entitlement with regards to protecting and retaining the riches of nature and the environment.
Others who spoke on World Environment Day include Kitbok Rymbai, Waheh Chnong of Khliehtyrshi, Rtn. S.K.Lato, MPHF and also a special address from Rtn.Dr.Vincent Darling, Ex-Vice Chancellor, Martin Luther Christian University,Shillong.
Dr.Darlong in speaking about the ways to protect the environment informed about the ways in which students in other countries take great care to make a difference in their daily routine towards nature and the environment and he especially invited the school students of Khliehtyrshi to try and make it a habit in their daily lives to be people with a responsibility towards the present and future of the environment.
The Rotary Club Jowai has also set a goal for the World Environment Day Celebration this year by planting 200 tree saplings in collaboration with the students and Dorbar Chnong of Khliehtyrshi.
