5 SPECIAL VEHICLES TO TRANSPORT UNDER TRIAL PRISONER FLAGGED OFF

HEADLINES

Shillong,14: M.Kharkrang (IPS), Inspector General of Prison, today flagged off 5 special vehicles meant to transport Under Trial Prisoners in the presence of the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills District, S.Nongtynger, Vivek Syiem, Superintendent of Police, Shillong City and other senior officers of the Police Department.

The 5 vehicles will also be shared with all the districts and subdivisions in the state.

Kharkrang handed over these 5 vehicles with the objective to bring about a transformation in the functioning of Jails through the Prison Department.

Besides the 5 vehicles, the department has also prepared to collaborate with the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society to provide and impart special skills training to the under trial prisoners in the jails and to provide a way for them to engage in physical exercises through different sports within the four walls of the prison.

Another point that Kharkrang has expressed is that the Government through the department has taken the decision to ease the cramped space in Shillong District Jail and for that it has kept a goal to complete the construction of Nongstoiñ District Jail, West Khasi Hills District and also to try and construct a Central Jail in the plot of land that is about 25 acres in New Shillong Township.

One other important point that he would like to see a change in is the name of the department from Prison Department to Prisons and Correctional Services which could be achieved if after a request is made, the Government agrees expressed Kharkrang while speaking to media persons.
