464 PRISONERS IN SHILLONG DISTRICT JAIL, POLICE DEPARTMENT AWAITS BEING HANDED OVER PLOT OF LAND FOR CONSTRUCTION OF CENTRAL JAIL

SHILLONG, March 21: The Inspector General of Police (Prison), Mariahom Kharkrang said that the Police Department is waiting only for the State Government to hand over the plot of 25 acres in New Shillong Township for the construction of the Central Jail.

He said that there are two means now to ease the space congestion of Shillong District Jail which to complete the construction of the jail in Nongstoiñ and start the construction of the Central Jail.

He informed that the police department and the Buildings department of the Government will prepare a master plan for the construction of the Central Jail, once the plot of land is handed over by the Government. He said that it may take some time to move forward with the process as the allocation of funds will also have to be decided by the Government.

On the other hand, the IGP expressed that there is space congestion in Shillong District Jail as it is a jail which can fit only about 164 prisoners, but at present there are 464 prisoners altogether which consists of 448 male prisoners and 16 female prisoners.

With regard to the Nongstoiñ District Jail, the chief of the police said that till date, about 60% of the construction has progressed with many parts still requiring to be completed.
