Shillong: Four labourers from Assam died reportedly after being exposed to toxic gas while cleaning an underground septic tank at Rangdokram in South Garo Hills on Sunday.
According to sources, two labourers initially attempted to open the septic tank lid but were exposed to gas accumulated inside and collapsed. Two others reportedly tried to rescue them but were also overcome by the gas and fell unconscious.
Police and Fire and Rescue personnel reached the spot and launched a rescue operation. Two Fire and Rescue personnel also reportedly became unconscious while attempting to reach the labourers and were provided immediate medical attention.
Due to the risks involved in entering the tank, police personnel reportedly dug through the surrounding soil to gain access to the underground structure.
The deceased have been identified as Mofidur Rohman, 34, of Diara; Ajiyer Rahman, 41, of Chengurchar; Ismail Hussain, 20, of Chomrashali; and Rakib Hussain, 22, of Boalia, all from South Salmara-Mankachar district of Assam.
Sources said the septic tank allegedly lacked a proper gas outlet or soak pit, which may have contributed to the accumulation of gas inside. The exact gas involved has not yet been confirmed.
Septic tanks can contain hazardous gases such as hydrogen sulphide and methane, which can pose serious risks in enclosed spaces.
