Charlotte, North Carolina: A tragic incident unfolded on August 22 when Iryna Zarutska (23), a Ukrainian refugee who had fled her war-torn country for safety in the US, was fatally stabbed on the Lynx Blue Line light rail.
Surveillance footage released Friday by the Charlotte Area Transit System showed Zarutska, still in her pizzeria uniform, scrolling on her phone before being ambushed by Decarlos Brown Jr (34). Police said Brown stabbed her at least three times, including once in the neck, before fleeing at the next station. Zarutska collapsed inside the train and was pronounced dead before she could get off.
Police later arrested Brown, who was treated for a hand injury at a hospital. The knife used in the killing was recovered from the station platform.
Court records reveal Brown’s long criminal history dating back to 2011, including larceny, robbery with a deadly weapon, and communicating threats. He previously served five years in prison.
Authorities have not established a clear motive for the attack. The case has sparked shock and outrage, highlighting safety concerns on Charlotte’s public transit system.
