Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Wednesday expressed concern over the recurring issue of waterlogging in Shillong, particularly in the Lower Lachumiere area near the Secretariat Hill, calling it a serious challenge for the department responsible for city planning.
She said that she had recently inspected the Lachumiere area along with Dorbar Shnong to inspect the road stretching from All Saints School to Lower Lachumiere. According to her, the area frequently experiences waterlogging due to inadequate drainage systems that are too narrow and shallow to handle the volume of rainwater.
Lyngdoh stressed the urgent need to redesign and upgrade the drainage infrastructure to allow proper water flow and prevent overflow onto the roads. She said the Urban Affairs Department must take this issue seriously, as every bout of rain leads to waterlogging in key parts of the city.
She also informed that the Urban department already has a Master Plan in place, aimed at improving the city’s infrastructure, including roads, footpaths and other essential amenities.
